How to enable backorder in magento

A backorder in magento is nothing a but a customer order which cannot be fulfilled while placing the order, for which a customer has to wait for some time. It’s a system which allows you to sell products on your website that are out of stock in your warehouse.

To enable backorder in magento we have to do some configuration settings in the magento admin. In this post let us see how we can achieve this,

In the magento admin panel,
1. go to System -> Configuration.
2. Click on “Inventory” sub menu in the “Catalog “ menu available on the left side.
3. Click on “Product Stock Options”.
4. In the product stock options page, set “Allow Qty Below 0 and Notify Customer” for the backorder field.

After this you have to edit the particular product and set qty to 0 and status to “In stock”. Now when adding this product to the cart, the cart page will populated with the following message “This product is not available in the requested quantity” which means it is a backorder. That’s all we have to do to enable backorder in magento.
